Rolex Sky-Dweller

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is the most complicated watch in the modern Oyster lineup: a 42mm dual time zone annual calendar that debuted at Baselworld 2012 as Rolex's first all-new model line in two decades and the brand's first annual calendar ever. At launch it was protected by 14 patents, five of them brand new, most of them tied to two signature innovations: the Saros annual calendar and the Ring Command bezel.

The Patents: Saros Calendar & Ring Command Bezel

The Saros annual calendar, named after the astronomical cycle that realigns the Earth, Sun, and Moon, automatically distinguishes 30- and 31-day months and needs just one correction per year, on March 1. The month is displayed discreetly through twelve small apertures around the dial's hour markers, keeping the dial clean. Reference time in a second zone is tracked on an off-center rotating 24-hour disc, while a jumping local hour hand can be set forward or backward in one-hour increments without disturbing the minutes, seconds, or date, ideal for frequent travelers.

The patented Ring Command bezel turns the Sky-Dweller's fluted bezel into a functional component: rotating it selects which function the winding crown adjusts (local time, reference time, or the calendar), via a mechanical interface of roughly 60 parts connecting bezel, case, and movement. It remains one of the most ingenious control systems Rolex has ever engineered. Inside, the in-house caliber 9001 (updated to caliber 9002 with the 2023 refresh) runs on 380+ components, among the most complex movements Rolex has ever produced, with a 72-hour power reserve and Superlative Chronometer certification.

2012: Launched exclusively in 18k yellow, white, and Everose gold. 2017: Oystersteel and Rolesor (two-tone) models arrive with baton indices, opening the Sky-Dweller to a much wider audience. 2020: Yellow gold and Everose models offered on the sporty Oysterflex bracelet. 2021: The Jubilee bracelet joins the line on Oystersteel and Rolesor models, instantly becoming the collector favorite. 2023: Full technical refresh with the new-generation caliber 9002. 2025: The Jubilee bracelet finally extends to the full precious metal models, paired with two headline dials.

Its counterpart, the 18k Everose gold Sky-Dweller on Jubilee, debuted with Rolex's "blue-green" dial, the official Rolex name for a color that reads predominantly blue on the wrist, shifting toward teal-green in changing light against the warm rose gold case.
